Here at USPlabs, we LOVE BCAA's…
The problem is we take so much of them, all of the artificial flavors and colors in high amounts were giving us headaches, making us nauseous and basically leaving us feeling lethargic and, quite frankly, like crap…
…In addition, and maybe even more importantly, we just couldn't find the BCAA ratio we wanted…So we did what we do best - developed our own…
It's called USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™
Rules For BCAA
We made it VERY clear to our R & D team – USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ MUST be developed under these strict rules:
• BCAA Ratio formulation with mTOR activation in mind
• No Artificial Colors
• Natural, refreshing taste
• No L-Glutamine
Little Known Anabolic Pathway - mTOR
If you've never heard of mTOR (and even if you have), listen up and listen good as this is one of THE most under-rated anabolic & protein synthesis pathways known to man…
And…chances are…you're not even coming close to maximizing its enormous potential…
mTOR (Mammalian Target of Rapamycin) is a large proline-directed serine-threonine protein kinase that's responsible for a wide range of physiologic and metabolic functions in several cell types, including both adipocytes (fat cells) and myocytes (muscle cells)…
Among its many roles, mTOR is responsible for hypertrophic growth (an increase in muscle cell size, for example), protein synthesis and tissue morphogenesis…
As a result, compounds which target the regulatory pathways of mTOR have been highly sought out for quite some time…
A wide range of data have suggested that amino acids are capable of directly regulating mTOR signaling pathways in skeletal muscle (1, 2, 3, 4), including the possibility that they activate some of the cell signaling elements upstream from mTOR in the insulin/growth factor signaling pathway…
Unlike Your Mom, mTOR DOES Play Favorites
However, this same data suggest that the amino-acid induced activation of mTOR signaling pathways is not uniform, and there is evidence that the mechanism of mTOR activation may be both tissue and amino acid specific (5, 6).
In particular, the amino acid leucine is indicated as being primarily responsible for the branched chain amino-acid induced activation of mTOR signaling pathways, and therefore mTOR's effect on protein turnover and synthesis (1 – 6).
This hypothesis has come about as studies have shown that most of the effects of amino acids on mTOR signaling are abolished by lowering the concentration of leucine, or increased by adding leucine and, to a lesser extent, the other branched-chained amino acids.
Leucine IS the Star…BUT…
In other words, leucine is the star, but it also must be mentioned that the other two BCAA's, isoleucine & valine, need to be present in order to maximize results…
8-1-1 BCAA Ratio
With the above in mind, we've formulated USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ with an 8-1-1 leucine-isoleucine-valine ratio…
In terms of the leucine, the reasoning here is that, from a strictly technical standpoint, the data displays that only leucine and those other amino acids structurally related to leucine are responsible for the increase in mTOR commonly associated with BCAA supplementation.
Results & Value
As you know, many people are doubling, tripling, even quadrupling their dosage of BCAAs with a 2:1:1 & 4:1:1 bias in order to achieve better results…
Given the fact that leucine is most likely the amino acid responsible for this effect, particularly in skeletal muscle, having a formula with an 8:1:1 ratio eliminates the need for such increased dosing.
Effectively creating an enormous value in addition to the other benefits.
3 Man Enter – 1 Man Leave
The other issue here is amino acid transport and metabolism. All three of the branched chain amino acids – leucine, isoleucine and valine – compete for the same transport systems, and as a result, the presence of high concentrations of the other two branch-chained amino acids may lower intracellular levels of leucine…
…Obviously NOT what you want…
This is further compounded by the fact that, once ingested, leucine first fulfills other structural roles unrelated to protein metabolism prior to activating mTOR signaling pathways…
The result is that BCAA products with a 2:1:1 or 4:1:1 bias may actually counteract the anabolic effects from the product, as these substrates are pitted against one another to compete for metabolism.
By increasing the "normal" ratio of leucine to the other two branched chain amino acids, we ensure two things:
1.Double & mega dosing are unnecessary, as we have already doubled the component that is primarily responsible for the protein turnover and synthesis increases we see with BCAAs.
2.Competitive metabolism between the amino acids will not lower leucine levels to the point that it is unable to regulate mTOR.
Simply put, a 2:1:1 or 4:1:1 bias, while effective, is by no means optimal for mTOR signaling pathway activation, and an increase in protein synthesis associated with it.
Let's be honest – when your uncle was rockin' his Zubaz & fannypack, he was drinking the same bulky BCAA's that you're drinking right now…
Sure, now there's instantized BCAA's – but they are incredibly expensive & made by using soy…
And I know you're tired of BCAA "floaties" and losing valuable product stuck to the side of the bottle…
That's why the BCAA's in USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ utilize an advanced micronization process that produces an incredibly light & voluminous powder that mixes great!
Plus, USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ will keep you on your game at the gym or at work – no BCAA moustache or stained teeth to worry about…
Are You Drinking Ammonia?
Everyone knows creatine can quickly turn to its waste byproduct creatinine when mixed in water…
So why doesn't anyone ever talk about what L-Glutamine can break down to?
Middle School Memories
Remember that nasty ammonia smell when your middle school custodian was washing the floors? You could just smell and taste the toxicity…
I distinctly remember walking into the locker room before Phys Ed class and the freshly-applied ammonia felt like it was eating away my eye-balls… I think it's safe to say we all have similar memories.
No way you would ever drink that stuff, right?
That's if you've been drinking L-Glutamine…
L-glutamine is known for its instability, in the dry state and especially in an aqueous solution (5,6). The degradation products from L-glutamine can be glutamic acid, ammonia and pyroglutamic acid, the latter two being potentially toxic (5-9).
What's worse is the longer it sits in water, the more degradation takes place! Yuck! Needless to say, that's why we made it a rule that L-Glutamine was not in the USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ formula…
Instead, to assist with blood glutamine pools, we've included a compound called Sustamine™…
This particular product consists of a glutamine dipeptide (L-alanyl-L-glutamine), which is more stable and far more water soluble than regular L-glutamine (1).
These physicochemical properties alone may provide greater effectiveness as compared to l-glutamine. However, the presence of a unique intestinal transporter for the dipeptide may also allow for an increased amount of glutamine to reach the bloodstream and into skeletal muscle as compared to regular free L-glutamine (2-4).
These notions are supported by the higher glutamine concentrations in plasma and skeletal muscle of animal models administered alanyl-glutamine, as compared to those observed with free L-glutamine (3,4).
This is important because up to 65% of regular L-glutamine can be destroyed before it makes its way to your muscles…
Would You Step Over a $20 Bill To Pick Up A Quarter?
As mentioned, we added Sustamine to assist with blood glutamine pools, but I want to make it abundantly clear we're not trying to win glutamine product of the year here…
USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ is a BCAA formula first & foremost because, quite frankly, that's what delivers the goods…
If you want a bunch of ingredients that really won't have a significant impact on your physique & performance, then USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ probably isn't for you… I mean, why run a 6 yard draw when you can hit a 60 yard bomb over the top? If you want an awesome BCAA product designed for those who truly realize just how important BCAA's are, then USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ was made with you in mind.
Yes, I know, you've heard that one before – only to be disappointed…
And while taste is highly subjective, I'm incredibly confident you simply won't believe you're drinking a naturally flavored BCAA product…You'll want to drink it all day long!
USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ comes in two incredibly refreshing flavors :
•Grape Bubblegum (mixes clean with slight purple tint)
•White Blue Raspberry (White because there is no coloring –natural blue coloring is unstable so we decided to leave it out - and Blue because it tastes and smells like you expect Blue Raspberry to).
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ contains a ratio of 8:1:1 (leucine, to isoleucine, to valine) instead of the standard 2:1:1 or 4:1:1 mixes. Why is this ratio best?
A: USPlabs chose to formulate its entry into the BCAA market with a revolutionary 8:1:1 ratio due to one term: mTOR. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a protein kinase that plays a key role in regulating several aspects of cell metabolism.
When adequate levels of nutrients (glucose, amino acids, lipoproteins, minerals) are available, mTOR is activated and turns on the cell's inner machinery, which includes the ribosomes responsible for the synthesis of proteins that are involved in muscular hypertrophy (growth!).
Well, I say all that to say this: many studies have shown that leucine, above all other amino acids, is responsible for regulating mTOR, and therefore, skeletal muscle protein metabolism.
Q: If Leucine is the star, why not just take straight Leucine?
A: While the majority of available scientific research does indeed present leucine as the king of protein synthesis, so to speak, there are drawbacks to using it alone. As we said above, the presence of the two additional BCAAs (iso-leucine and valine) can reduce intracellular leucine levels – well, by the same token, administration of leucine alone, over time, can reduce levels of valine and iso-leucine as well.
The key is to create a formula that a) privileges leucine over the other BCAAs in order to constantly maintain adequate levels of protein synthesis and b) one which does not create an imbalance between the amino acids in doing so.
Enter Modern BCAA Plus!
Q: I have always double- or mega-dosed my amino acids before Modern BCAA Plus™. Do I have to double- and mega-dose Modern BCAA Plus™ as well?
A: In short, no! The reason for increasing the dose on BCAA products based on the traditional amino acid backbones (2:1:1 and 4:1:1) is to increase the effects BCAAs have on skeletal muscle protein synthesis. Well, as we said above, USPlabs has either doubled or quadrupled the amount of leucine that your current product has – and because leucine is the amino acid primarily responsible for increase skeletal muscle protein synthesis, there is no need to mega-dose!
As referenced in the first question, if you are mega dosing a 2:1:1 or 4:1:1 ratio, you are also mega dosing isoleucine and Valine which could potentially impact leucine metabolism and block mTOR activation.
Q: The advertisements and labels on Modern BCAA Plus™ say the product mixes clear and clean, but mine still has floaties and foam. Did I receive a bad batch?
A: No, absolutely not! Due to the strict standards of quality and purity that USPlabs adheres to in the production of Modern BCAA Plus™, there are no "bad batches." If you are experiencing "floaties" or "foam," please take a look at the instructions to make sure you are properly mixing your BCAAs:
• Did you use 20oz of water for 2 scoops (10oz per scoop)? If not, too little or too much water could affect the solubility of Modern BCAA Plus™.
• Did you use excessively cold water? If so, try cool but not excessively cold water, as this may also affect the initial solubility of Modern BCAA Plus™.
• Did you shake for 30 seconds? Again, like the other two conditions, shaking for at least 30 seconds and allowing the product to "rest" for an additional 30 seconds is necessary for optimal solubility.
• The amino's precent in Modern BCAA Plus, especially leucine, can act hydroscopically, meaning they don't mix well in water. It's remarkable just how well Modern BCAA Plus mixes considering the power & high dose of leucine per serving.
Q: My current BCAA mix stains my teeth, clothes and drink containers, and burns my throat! Is Modern BCAA Plus™ going to do the same?
A: USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ contains no artificial flavors, colors or dyes – making sure that not only do your clothes, teeth and cups stay clean, but also that you're not drinking toxic substances on a daily basis!
Artificial dyes have absolutely no role in enhancing a product's effectiveness besides lending a potentially toxic substance to simply add color. Are you willing to take that risk over a useless color? A competitor of ours once said it enhances the consumer experience…I replied with "Are you selling cereal to 7 year olds?"
Q: I have seen glutamine as part of other BCAA matrixes, but USPlabs Modern BCAA Plus™ contains Sustamine™, a unique form of glutamine. Why is this form any better than my run-of-the-mill glutamine?
A: Sustamine™ represents a significant step forward in L-Glutamine supplementation, and is superior to glutamine in several ways. Sustamine™, a dipeptide combining L-Alanine and L-Glutamine (L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine), is more stable and far more water soluble than regular L-glutamine.
These physicochemical properties alone may provide greater effectiveness as compared to l-glutamine. However, the presence of a unique intestinal transporter for the dipeptide may also allow for an increased amount of glutamine to reach the bloodstream and into skeletal muscle as compared to regular free L-glutamine.
These notions are supported by the higher glutamine concentrations in plasma and skeletal muscle of animal models administered alanyl-glutamine, as compared to those observed with free L-glutamine. This is important because up to 65% of regular L-glutamine can be destroyed before it makes its way to your muscles… L-glutamine is known for its instability, in the dry state and especially in an aqueous solution.
The degradation products from L-glutamine can be glutamic acid, ammonia and pyroglutamic acid, the latter two being potentially toxic. What's worse is the longer it sits in water, the more degradation takes place! So, needless to say, if you are drinking regular L-Glutamine, you are most likely drinking potentially toxic by-products, such as ammonia, as well.
Q: When and how is it best to use Modern BCAA Plus™?
A: While Modern BCAA Plus™ can be used at any point of the day, and can even be sipped on non-workout days, using it either intra (during) or post-workout is the best application of the product.
Using Modern BCAA Plus™ at this time can help prevent the transient (temporary) breakdown of skeletal muscle protein for fuel, inhibition of skeletal muscle protein synthesis, as well as increase muscle protein synthesis. In simpler terms, using it at this time pushes your body into a more anabolic state, and less of a catabolic one!
Q: To expand on that, is Modern BCAA Plus™ best suited for "cutting" or "bulking"?
A: Modern BCAA Plus™ has a wide-range of applications, the protein-sparing and protein synthesis-promoting aspects can be effective while cutting (in a calorie deficit) or bulking.
Q: What is the difference between my whey protein and Modern BCAA Plus™? Is one better than the other?
A: Let me give you an analogy. When you look at a house, you can consider it in two ways: as both a whole house, but also as a house made up of individual components.
Well, when we say "whey protein," it is like the house, and amino acids are like the individual components that form the structure of that house. Like a house, not all the components are as necessary as the others, and which components you consider necessary depends on what you are doing.
For the specific purpose of strenuous exercise, the materials (amino acids) that comprise common whey protein matrixes may not be adequate for the stimulation of protein synthesis, and the inhibition of protein breakdown. Supplementing with Modern BCAA Plus™, an amino acid matrix specifically formulated to provide you with the amino acids most responsible for protein synthesis, helps to create an environment which is more adequate for protein synthesis.
Q: Can I use Modern BCAA Plus™ with USPlabs Jack3d™? What about with other USPlabs products?
A: Yes, Modern BCAA Plus™ can be used with Jack3d™, or any other USPlabs products for that matter!
Q: Can I combine my creatine product with Modern BCAA Plus™?
Q: How long can I use Modern BCAA Plus™? Is there any need to "cycle off?"
A: Of course! In short, the beneficial effect that creatine monohydrate supplementation has on energy balance (by providing intracellular ATP) works perfectly with the BCAA's effects on the same processes. In fact, USPlabs Jack3d is a perfect complement to Modern BCAA Plus™, for that reason and others!
A: To give a short and sweet answer – the best kind – no, there is no need to cycle Modern BCAA Plus™. They can be used consecutively for an indefinite period of time.
