Methoxyisoflavone

What Is Methoxyisoflavone?

Methoxyisoflavone is a member of the family of flavonoids (isoflavones). An isoflavone is a naturally occurring, hormonally active substance found primarily in soy. Chemical modifications of isoflavones have been studied as possible alternative treatments for various conditions. One of these, ipriflavone, is a treatment for osteoporosis. Methoxyisoflavone is a chemical derivative of ipriflavone. It is a bodybuilding aid.

Ipriflavone is a synthetic isoflavone. It inhibits bone resorption and maintains bone density. In addition, it prevents osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Ipriflavone has a definite anabolic property. It’s anabolic effect stems from its ability to dramatically increase nitrogen retention, independent of calorie intake. This is huge from a bodybuilding standpoint. In fact, one of the keys to growth is maintaining a positive nitrogen balance.

Patented Methoxy

Let’s get back to Methoxy. In a U.S. patent, the developers based their claims on preliminary animal research. Furthermore, the claim is that it has muscle-building and bone-building effects. In addition, there are no side effects as seen with anabolic steroids.

The flavones Methoxy and Ipriflavone were originally discovered and patented by Chinoin. In addition, this Hungarian pharmaceutical company did nothing more with them after completing the initial research and acquiring a patent on them. They just put it on the shelf and forgot about it! In fact, this compound was locked up with a patent that expired in 1997! When the patent expired and researchers read the paperwork-well, they were impressed!

Evidence

While none of the original research was ever published, there is one placebo-controlled human trial on methoxyisoflavone that was published in abstract form in 2001.3. This study found that athletes who took 800 mg per day of methoxyisoflavone for 8 weeks. Test subjects experienced a significantly greater increase in muscle mass than those who took placebo. This study appeared in what is called a “supplement” published in association with a prestigious journal.

Methoxyisoflavone Supplements, Timing and Dosage

There are only a limited number of Methoxy products on the market. In fact most of the available products are formulas combining various nutrients with Methoxy. All of them come in capsule or tablet form. There are very few pure Methoxy products on the market at this time.

At one time, there was a protein powder based on methoxy. It had quite a build-up. While it was a good product, it was over priced and tasted horrible. That’s two good reasons it’s no longer around!

There are no real timing requirements listed on most of the product labels. However, Methoxy can help increase protein synthesis. Therefore, I would take one dosage post workout to help promote recovery and muscle growth. Of course, protein synthesis is a direct trigger of muscle growth. Adding this to your stack of products that help promote this event makes a lot of sense. You can take one other dosage any other time of the day. However, separate it by 6 hours. Some labels will suggest only one dose, therefore follow those instructions over my suggestions. Finally, follow dosage instructions on the label regardless of the product.
