Calcium pyruvate is manufactured by our bodies and plays a role in carbohydrate digestion and metabolism. What's in question is if this is really true. One study, conducted by Dr. Ronald Stanko at the University of Pittsburgh, determined that this is indeed the case. Obese female test subjects were subjected to a 1,000-calories a day diet for 3 weeks. The test subjects that were given calcium pyruvate saw a 48 percent increase in fat loss, or 3.2 pounds. Extremely large doses of 30g per day were required to achieve this effect. The typical dose is 5g per day which may not be strong enough to achieve the same effect. The cost of taking such a high dose may be to much for some users.

Adding Calcium pyruvate to your supplement program may support endurance athletes, this type of athlete requires continual ATP production for enough energy to perform extended exercise sessions. Delivering protein and glucose to hungry muscles as well as making ideal amounts of ATP available are the reported advantages of calcium pyruvate. Numerous reports of improved energy and reduced fatigue from endurance athletes are common but solid research is elusive. There is one peer-reviewed, published study in the "Journal of Applied Physiology" which demonstrated that a 25g dose of calcium pyruvate, added to a 75g dose of dihydroxyacetone resulted in a 20 percent increase in tricep muscle endurance over a seven day period of supplementation. Again, high dosages of this nutrient may be difficult for the average user to acquire.
Additional Benefits, Recommended Dose and Side Effects
Additional benefits of calcium pyruvate may be combat aging,enhanced muscle growth, reduced cholesterol and blood pressure, greater fatty acid utilization, improved glyogen storage and utilization and higher resting metabolic rate. While research has shown benefits with a much higher dosage, 5g per day is the typical suggested dose. There are no studies to speak of that reveal a benefit from a dose of 5 grams. Calcium pyruvate is manufactured by and used by the body, so it would be hard to take an overdose. Nonetheless, there have been some reported side effects, including gas, diarrhea, bloating and more bowel movements.
