Branch Cyclic Dextrin
Simple carbs are a real problem; in fact the idea of spiking insulin levels with simple carbs is old news. While the idea may seem good in theory, your body is smarter than that. Here’s why: your small intestine can sense nutrient density with receptors known as “osmoreceptors” – these regulate the rate of gastric emptying by sensing the concentration of the contents of your stomach as they are about to leave the stomach. This is the problem with simple carbs – despite rapid absorption in the small intestine; due to their high osmolality, simple carbs tend to trigger the osmoreceptors to slow gastric emptying into the small intestine which is where the simple carbs are absorbed. What’s worse, when you talk about an intra-workout drink, you’re slowing both amino and carb delivery! Don’t panic yet, there is, of course, a way to fool the stomach into releasing high amounts of carbs into the small intestine for faster absorption. By linking or branching together glucose molecules to form high molecular weight polymers, known as branched cyclic dextrins, the result is a significantly lower osmolality which then tricks the osmoreceptors to release these branched cyclic dextrins to leave the stomach much faster to be absorbed into the small intestine. What does all this mean? It means that you experience a fast, extended increase in blood sugar and insulin to fuel your toughest workouts!
