Marketing MYTH # 1 - Creatine Monohydrate has poor stability/rapid conversion to creatinine
If you listen to numerous supplement companies, creatine monohydrate is known for poor stability in the stomach and rapidly converts to the creatine waste product CREATININE. This myth goes on to declare, that because of the “apparent” high creatine to creatinine conversion rate in the stomach, little if any creatine actually gets absorbed into your muscles. No absorption, no benefits.
Research – Looking at early research that goes back to 1992, it’s been shown that creatine monohydrate has excellent stability. Researchers measured its stability and conversion rate to the waste product creatinine at various pH (acidic) levels to mimic the low pH (acidity) of human stomach acid. Here’s what they discovered. Less than 2 percent actually converted to creatinine, even after allowing it to sit in a low pH solution for four hours. Allowing it to sit in the same low pH solution for THREE FULL DAYS, only 4-20% of it converted to creatinine, and that depended on the pH of the solution it was sitting in. The creatine you consume isn’t going to be in your stomach for three days and let’s say it was, the SLOW conversion rate still allows more than enough unconverted creatine to increase muscle creatine levels enough to result in good performance results. So, as it turns out this is nothing more than a fictitious myth with no real scientific evidence to back it up and shouldn’t concern any individuals currently using creatine monohydrate.
