The term “steroid,” according to the PDR Medical Dictionary, applies to a very “large family of chemical substances, comprising many hormones, body constituents and drugs.” Most steroids, particularly anabolic-androgenic steroids, are artificial substances derived from the male hormone testosterone. Anabolic steroids were used by a generation of athletes to build muscle and bulk until so many unsafe side effects emerged that most of these drugs were banned.

The two most popular forms of steroids are pills that are taken orally and liquids that are injected intramuscularly.

use without a doctor’s prescription. THG, a recently unmasked steroid that until this summer was untraceable in anti-doping tests, has been getting the latest headlines. But bodybuilders and authorities on America’s muscle subculture say THG is just one of many designer steroids that have been available for years. One of the strongest, most effective legal testosterone boosters in America is Androstenedione, also known as Andro. It can be compared to Dianabol, one of the strongest steroids made, and illegal in the US, except for medical purposes.

The most popular steroid seems to be Deca Durabolin (nandrolone decanoate). Testosterone esters are also common, including the following drugs: Sostanon 250, Primoteston, and Sten. Androgen compounds, including some prepared for veterinary purposes, are gaining popularity.

What Steroids Can Do To You
Anabolic steroid misuse became a national concern over the past decade. The use of steroids is a rising problem with today’s young people, who among other things get a large portion of their misconstrued information from the fitness industry and muscle publications. The side effects of steroid use include:
• Infertility
• Stunted growth
• Aggressiveness
• Acne
• Irreversible connective tissue injury
• Masculinization (among young women)

NBC-TV newswoman Jane Pauley revealed that she has bipolar disorder in her chronicle Skywriting. In the part of her book excerpted for the August 20, 2004 People, Pauley writes that she experienced hypomania after the initial administration of steroids for a case of hives, and depression with the second.

The positive drug test that has left baseball’s Rafael Palmeiro’s legacy uncertain involved the powerful anabolic steroid stanozolol. The drug does not come in dietary supplements and is among the most popular steroids on the market, though Palmeiro said that he had never intentionally taken steroids. Recognized by its brand name, Winstrol, stanozolol was most remarkably connected to the runner Ben Johnson of Canada, who was stripped of a gold medal in 1988 after testing positive for the steroid.

Efforts to improve performance are nothing new in competitive sports. Hundreds of years ago sportspersons consumed special meals of meat and honey when training for important events. What drugs and supplements are allowed? The expressions banned drug and banned substance refer to chemicals that are barred from use during athletic competition and training. Different sport associations forbid different substances, when they outlaw anything at all.
